Scammers often rely on urgency, pressure and emotion rather than honesty. They may claim that many other people want the room, ask you to pay immediately, or avoid answering simple questions. Their goal is to stop you from taking time to verify the information.
If someone discourages you from asking questions, viewing the property, or confirming details, treat it as a warning sign.
📱 Fake WhatsApp Scams
A scammer may contact you on WhatsApp pretending to be the landlord or Rooms4You. They might send fake payment instructions or ask you to continue the conversation outside the platform.
Stay Safe:- Verify the person's identity.
- Be cautious of new numbers claiming to replace previous contacts.
- Never trust screenshots as proof of payment or identity.
💳 Deposit Scams
One of the most common scams is requesting a deposit before you've seen the room or verified the landlord.
Stay Safe:- View the property first whenever possible.
- Confirm who owns or manages the property.
- Never rush into sending money.
🏠 Fake Landlord Scams
Someone may advertise a room they don't own or claim to represent the property owner.
Stay Safe:- Ask questions about the property.
- Request identification where appropriate.
- Look for our Verified badge when available.
📸 Stolen Photo Scams
Scammers sometimes copy photos from other websites and reuse them to advertise fake listings.
Stay Safe:- Be cautious if the photos look unusually polished or inconsistent.
- Compare the photos with the actual property during a viewing.
- Report listings that appear misleading.
🔐 Password Scams
No genuine Rooms4You employee will ask for your password or one-time password (OTP).
Stay Safe:- Keep your password private.
- Do not share OTP codes.
- Use a strong, unique password.
📧 Fake Email Scams
Fraudsters sometimes send emails that look convincing but come from fake addresses.
Stay Safe:- Check that emails end with @rooms4you.co.za.
- Avoid clicking suspicious links.
- If unsure, contact us directly.
🚩 Red Flags to Watch For
- 🚩 The price is much lower than similar listings.
- 🚩 You are asked to pay before viewing the property.
- 🚩 The landlord refuses to meet or arrange a viewing.
- 🚩 The person becomes aggressive when you ask questions.
- 🚩 They ask you to move the conversation to another platform immediately.
- 🚩 They pressure you by saying "many people are waiting."
- 🚩 Payment must be made immediately or you'll "lose the room."

- ✔ Take your time before paying.
- ✔ Use trusted communication channels.

🧠 Township Rental Examples
Someone advertises a room in Mamelodi at a price that seems far below the local market. They ask you to pay a deposit immediately because they claim many people are interested. They refuse to arrange a viewing. This is a strong warning sign. Take time to verify the property before making any payment.
You receive a WhatsApp message from someone claiming to work for Rooms4You and asking you to pay a "booking fee" directly to them. Rooms4You does not currently collect rental deposits on behalf of landlords. Stop and verify the request through our official contact details.
A landlord becomes angry when you ask to see the property before paying. A genuine landlord should understand your need to verify the accommodation. Feeling pressured is a good reason to slow down and reconsider.
